Talking to a girl on facebook?

There is this girl in my class that I want to get to know a better. We have never spoken before. I don't have the balls to go and say hi because I think it is kind of weird, so my friend said into and talk to her on facebook.
Do you think it is weird if I randomly start talking to her on facebook?

    Thanks

You will look like a guy with no balls.....try bumping into her by accident and say hi. Tip: confidence wins girls.

So after I say hi, what do I say?

Ask her what colour underwear she has on.

But on a more serious note, if you dont know how to talk to a girl without asking us questions lilke this you really are doomed.

"So hey what's your name?""Aren't you in my ______class?" "So how's your day going?" Then give her a complement of some kind. During this time read her reactions....is she pulling away wanting to leave, or is she blushing and smiling at you...good eye contact? Then you say "K gtg, ttyl....." then rush off, but turn around and give her a glimpse back with a smile. You have to work it like that in small doses, it's called the push and pull method. You give her some attention, then you pull back and distance yourself...be mysterious. Never give her everything at once or she will see you as a needy dweeb. Don't go creepin on her with FB, let her invite you.

I sat next to a guy in my college Psych class who, out of absolutely nowhere, was like "Do you like the Misfits? I have these tickets to a show I can't go to." and proceeded to say if I wanted the tickets, I should give him my number and he'll give them to me. When I text him later that day, he replied "I actually have two tickets, and was wondering if you would go with me." This started a very sweet, while short lived, relationship. To this day, I'm impressed with how much courage he had coming up with such an idea to talk to me.

Random guys who I don't know who friend request me on Facebook usually won't even get accepted...let alone talked to via message.

Guys have pulled that crap on me and I thought it was lame because the intentions are misleading (sorry just my opinion).....it's like a guy offers to buy you a drink (actually it's the waitress asking for him), but he says you have to sit with him..... Loser.

ask her something about the class, for example if you are in the hall, like "hey, you are in xx class with me, do u know if... (choose something simple, like the dates of the exams or a text). If she is not aware of you, you could say u miss the last class and you are lost.
