Talking after breakup..

My long distance gf at the time and i, had been going through a period of relationship death in the past 3-4 months. We had no time to phone to each other, and when I found time she talked to me in front of her friends. Finally, having decided to stop answering calls and messages from my her before new years, we stopped communicating completely.

A few months later, broken up, I received a happy bday message on my phone on my birthday. I was surprised she remembered. I replied "thank you" and she wished me pleasantries. I didn't reply...

Since then Ive been thinking why she sent me a happy bday message at all. And I decided that I should send her a message on her bday too. It's today. I asked her how she was doing. Her replies are brief.

I'm confused. Am I missing something? Should I ask outright why she messaged me out of the blue?

It's always a good thing to leave on peaceful terms. Let of of the past and let go of the injuries. I would just leave it as she was being nice and wished you a happy birthday.
