I don't think you asked him a confusing question, so I think he either wanted to let you down softly, or he had never thought about you in a romantic way before and didn't expect you to ask him. Has he spoken to you since your confession?

I'd say he might have been taken aback by your admission if you've been 'friends'. He might not have thought you'd be interested so said he doesn't know while he thinks through 'could this work'. As a guy, if I was single I'd like to keep the option open and think about it. I've known girls I didn't really fancy then suddenly I did, weird!
