good point, I agree the experiment is flawed. heck the sample size is way too small to call itself any kind of study. But, I think that's pretty obvious and it doesn't need to be pointed out; the original post does not claim to be a study, nor does it claim to pertain to a population broader than american myspace users with only online contact.

If I were to say, "all those I know from Missouri are extremely nice people!" (this is true).. would you engage in some funny/thoughtful banter about your own friend from Missouri, OR would you get all huffy and say "your sample size is five and you only knew them online."? just seems kinda unnecessary and patronising, is all.

My point is not flawed. Actually, I could have gone into a lot more sceintific technicalities; what I outlined is mainly common sense and basics. And fair enough it's just for fun, but he's serious about his conclusions.

Who's to say it's a mistake? Well, I am. MySpace shouldn't be the only thing he used, but if he must, then there's ample opportunity to test people from other countries. No single country respresents the world, and 16 people from one country on MySace do not even represent that country.

I know this experiment isn't for a paper or for anything academic, but look at the lengths he went to, the conclusions he drew - it suggests his serious about it and is taking the conclusion seriously, therefore I will take what he wrote as seriously as he took it and rebutt it if I feel the need to.

But that's not what he said ... he said "hot girls are shallow". That's a very generlised all-encompassing statement.

And it's a good thing, too. Where would Love Forum be if everyone were reasonable and thought things through before posting? Or used spellcheck? Or didn't start sentences with conjunctions?

exactly my point. It wasn't a scientific study and you're applying scientific technicalities to it.

oh, in that case, I didn't take it as seriously as you did. Yes I debated about the conclusions and such, but that's just because I was talking about the issues/thoughts raised by a fun little experiment, not like i was peer-reviewing something!

no you're not. excuse me, where does it say that it's meant to be representative of an international population? It's clearly not meant to be. In fact, if you think about it for a while, seeing as it's a social/cultural sort of theme, specifically because these "types" of girls are cliché's of American high schools and colleges, making it international would be counter productive, even in a proper big study!

there you go with the countries again. Anyways, I bet the most enjoyable parts of doing this experiment were 1) thinking up how to execute this specifically on myspace, what with waiting a month and making up all the accounts with images and profiles and picking what music interests they liked and all that, etc., and 2) all the interaction and fun debates this would've caused between his group of friends.

get real. for a home-made project like this, I think it had an almost creepy level of organisation and planned-out-ness going on, even though I agree it wasn't perfect, that's not the point!

well then you should know that studies. can. never. prove. anything. They can only suggest links. And even if he's taking it that seriously - which I doubt, sounds like it was mostly for fun and food for thought - that doesn't mean you have to..

Tiay, I agree with you for all intents and purposes, I was just replying with the assumption that this guy was taking his conclusion very seriously. And you're arguing against me because of your own assumptions about this experiment.

Unless he comes back and clearly states what the purpose was and what he gained from the results (which I doubt he will now, and even if he does as if he won't be biased right now), we can keep on debating for another week, and I really don't feel like doing that. I felt a tad strongly about this experiment at the time, but now I couldn't care less anymore so ... ptthh

Tiay, why you gotta turn everything into some huge debate?

The dumb kid performed a stupid experiment which justified him and his friends in their idiotic generalizations and somebody put them in his place.

    I say good riddance.

    ever try... "real life" experiments..

how can you base yourself off of myspace lol. people wont take others seriously thru text and a picture. try doing it in person, where your personality might make an impact.

All this experiment proves is how much this guy would love to bury his dick in one of these out-of-reach paris clones.
