You misunderstand me, I never mentioned about them being honest or not and it has nothing to do with them telling them that they would rather eat shit than date them...lie or not..what I am saying is that you have to say SOMETHING. You mentioned for them to give absolutely NO answer. If my friend didn't answer my question I would find that as a sign of disrespect and our friendship with his/her silence would be put at jeopardy. It is absolutely unkind and rude to not answer a question at all, if they lie to me that is fine...of course unless I found out...in your example there is probably no way to find out. You can not make me go away with silence but I can comprehend the word no.
You know, she can tell him that she doesn't have the same feelings in return and/or she is married and would like to be left alone. Really simple. He can than take it like a man.

"Why are you an atheist?"
"because I paid attention in science class."
My bad, OV, sorry. My post was ambiguous, now I get it.
by 'might not give an honest answer' I didn't mean she shouldn't answer at all (agreed, that would disrespect the friendship), I was just referring to what I explained: that she might choose the somewhat dishonest 'soft letdown' to save his face & preserve the friendship.
Second thoughts can generally be amended with judicious action; injudicious actions can seldom be recovered with second thoughts.
