On the side note, I saw a Scientology van a few days ago which looked a bit like a Sideshow clownsmobile with bright colours shining their "truth" in all directions.

They are really stepping up the advertising. There's a whole bunch of stuff showing up on the web as well.

I think Scientology is a stupid thing for humanity, but honestly it's hard to say if it's any better or worse than any other stupid thing we already take for granted like reality TV. I'm sure there are some individuals that derive some sort of well being from the group therapy they have going on there.

I like to think of them as a negative selection for intelligence. Anyone who joins, is by definition, an idiot. That Narconon program is a disgrace.

BS-meter

Scientologists first find recruiting potentials on streets using a device called the BS-meter. The device measures how gullible scientific the candidate is. It also conducts a credit check on the applicant. The product of these two factors is called the "thetan level". If the thetan level is acceptably high the Scientologists invite the candidate to a scientology brainwashing movie.

You can make your own BS Meter by taking a Voltmeter, attach 2 strings to the voltmeter along with a tin can at each end of the strings, and writing "BS Meter" on it with a felt tip pen, and then mailing off $1300 to the "Church".

I met a scientologist once, or ex maybe. He worked at a restaurant I used to work at. He told me a bit about it and told me it wasn't as ****ed up as the media makes it out to be. Some of the stuff he told me was kind of cool, like that they believe that your soul is driving your body like a car (a neat metaphor) but even he said the part about meds was ridiculous.

It's not a soul, it's a Thetan driving your body. They believe that souls of aliens from billions of years ago are in charge of our bodies and we are their slaves who need to know how to take our body back from them by becoming a higher level operating Thetan.

Psychology is evil and was directly responsible for two world wars, but Scientology will help to erase this tyranny and save mankind.

It really does help to read widely. One then realizes how much of this is just recycled ideas from other people.

Ever notice that the religious are the quickest to get defensive and offended when people question their beliefs, but the non-religious generally find it amusing when people question theirs?

I didn't notice that because it doesn't happen. Both groups get irritated. You wish (actually, probably think) that what you said is true. It would be a conveniently disparaging observation. However there really isn't any fundamental difference in human nature between religious and non religious people, despite what you may think or wish
