Someone slipped through the cracks, had a loaded weapon and went apeshit. It happens all over, it's just a bit unnerving to know it occurred deep inside our Military ranks. My heart goes out to all the mom's and dad's and the guys who serve with them.
It was a rotten apple and it's a shame that it takes a tragedy to put new checks and balances and preventive measures in place, but let's hope it will never happen again.
it's not the first or last time something like that has happened. human nature.

Reminded of it constantly... everyone here in Texas have the flags at half-mast... it's a very sad sight.
Damn shame that more and more brats are able to throw tantrums with loaded weapons. Why can't they just silently kill themselves? It'd be the decent thing to do.
"The weakest soul, knowing its own weakness, and believing this truth that strength can only be developed by effort and practice, will, thus believing, at once begin to exert itself, and, adding effort to effort, patience to patience, and strength to strength, will never cease to develop, and will at last grow divinely strong."

Did anyone else find it really ironic that the guy who went crazy was a psychiatrist?
Don't cry, don't regret and don't blame
Weak find the whip, willing find freedom
Towards the sun, carry your name
In warm hands you are given
Ask the wind for the way
Uncertainty's gone, your path will unravel
Accept all as it is and do not blame
God or the Devil

In the end, you still have to trust in people's stated motives. Trust, but verify. You can't control for every situation. Best we can do without becoming a police society.
Second thoughts can generally be amended with judicious action; injudicious actions can seldom be recovered with second thoughts.

His lawyer is afraid he won't get a fair trial.
13 dead?
Fair would be torture before death, but he'll probably get off light with lethal injection.
Does the military still hang people?
Psychiatrists are probably the craziest people I know.
the guy probably heard countless stories of people losing their minds going to iraq. for me i think i would lose my mind too if i had to listen to them day after day and then be forced myself to go there.
baby ya hustle. but me i hustle harder.
Chances are greater that he probably wasn't liked much. There's more than enough support from your unit before you are shipped out -- if you make an effort to get along with everyone. My brother has already had two tours of Iraq... he said if it weren't for his unit being so close or the friendliness of other troops... it would've been a hell of a lot worse.

I don't think I'd lose my mind in quite the same way though.
I'm pretty strongly opposed to the death penalty, but I think treason -> death penalty is in order here. I can find few cases that actually fit the criteria more closely.
