We have been talking to each other for a few months. Our conversations are quite light and very decent. Only recently he told me he was thinking of me the first time. Is he making himself vulnerable?

He said something along the lines of "I have been thinking about you lately" I wouldnt call that making himself vulnerable unless by vulnerable you mean vulnerable to rejection.
If he said you were the first girl he has ever really cared for, or that you make his world have meaning, thats making himself vulnerable, not just saying he's been thinkin of you

But our talks are very friendlly decent talks. Is it a risk to admit something in front of somebody they care when he does not know how I will react?

Saying I've been thinking about you is really not that big of a deal. Or at least in my opinion. Even if he said he had a dream about you, unless he says he's been dreaming about you (aka plural)

No, he's not opening up and being vulnerable. He's in fact being very cautious in his relationship with you. That's a pretty non-committal way of testing whether or not you're interested in further advances from him.
