I've noticed the odd post on here about it. I seems to me that tipping is a big cultural thing for Americans (at least going by the people I know and the characters I see on TV). If someone doesn't tip (or even someone who does, but doesn't tip enough) can be considered to be cheap or even be considered an "ass" for doing so. Like it's rude not to do so. The convention even seems to extend to doing the actual maths as though an specific amount is need as not to be considered cheap or rude, and even a penny less would be heresy.

On the other side of the pond, besides "keep the change", we don't really tip in Britain, the exception is Taxi drivers (I don't know why they are special, even my ex-taxi driver girlfriend doesn't know). I guess the thought is "Why should I give you money for doing the job you are being paid to do. A job which then usually add a 'service charge' to my bill anyway".

I can maybe see the point if the person in question is doing more than they are required to do in their job description, but not for just doing their job, surly? One person told me they tip waiters (and other serving staff) because they used to be one and they know how much of a bastard some customers can be. But what if I'm not a bastard? Why should I tip?

Well unless they are doing something beyond their paid duties I don't see the point of tipping at all. The reason I say taxi drivers is because my gf used to be one, and through her I know a lot of them, and they all get tipped very well. Probably has more to do with how drunk their passengers are most of the time though.

I went on holiday with my friend once, when we were kids, with his parents, and they made us tip all our waiters (this was in Spain), even the crap ones that couldn't get out orders right, but I never saw them do it back here.

But other than that I have had no experience with tipping. I don't do it (generally speaking, I might put some money in a jar or say "keep the change"), none of my friends do (I went out to a restaurant with my friends only a few day ago), I have friends from all walks of life (from the chavviest of chavs to the toffist of oxfordites) and its just not something that any of them do. In my experience you would be the exception. Not saying that I'm right and your wrong, just that this is my experience of tipping. Is your experience purely personal or is this a tend you've observed generally?

When you come to eat at my resturant, and I serve you and you and your partner eat $50 worth of food. And you tip me %15 (which is $7.50). I do not get to keep that. I have to tip my kitchen 7.5%, busser 1%, bartender 1%, hostess 0.5% and food runner 0.5%, service kid 0.5%. These are mandatory tips you HAVE to tip out as a server. That means I get to walk with 4% of tips which according to my example is a measly $2. I don't think many people know you have to tip out soo, soo, soo much. So yeah I think it's "cheap/ rude" to not tip and pisses me right off.

Well it makes sense there I guess, because tipping is factored into your wage. Makes sense, but sounds like a pretty unfair system to me. Most of the places I know here, I've had a couple of waiter/waitress friends, and generally speaking their wage was paid fairly and tips were all placed in a jar and split evenly at the end of the week or month. Not saying that's what it's like everywhere, but it is in my limited experience.

i don't get why you people say you wont tip people..im a server and only we only get 2.13 an hour. maybe you don't tip in britain but that's prolly cuz the servers get paid more per hour and dont make their living off of their tips. plus we have to tip out the foodrunners and the bartenders..and we have to tip out based on our sales not how much we get tipped..so if we dont get enough tips during our shift in order to tip out then it has to come out of our pocket so basically we would be paying to work. i know not everyone tips what they should but i tip 20% anytime i go out to eat!

If you are struggling to make ends meet with your earnings as a server, then why are you going out to eat? That's fuccking expensive, make your own food from the fruits and veggies, meats, and pastas you can buy at the grocery store in bulk

i never said i was struggling to make ends meet as a server! i get good tips and make good money serving...people actually tip 20% here...of course we get the occasional cheap ass that can't tip what they should but i never said im struggling. and i know its not supposed to be a career but it's what im doing while going to school...serving is easy to do because it works with my schedule.. and if you think that's expensive then maybe you should stay home and "make your own food from the fruits and veggies, meats, and pastas you can but at the grocery store in bulk" becuase that is what you should tip when you have good service.
