Are you kidding me? Your friend is WRONG. I have never heard of a guy that would dislike a girl asking them out. We have to do it all the time, and we have to try and decipher all these subtle hints that girls that won't take the initiative try to give. You did nothing wrong.

As far as letting him know you're interested? Easy. Flirt with him, act excited to be around him, show him you're interested in what he has to say, etc. You don't want to drop subtle hints that they may not get. Like others have said, don't start acting possessive, jealous, etc. Also, if you try to make some guy commit to something serious early on he may very well bail.
