If its about weight it might suggest that she doesn't like sports, or doesn't hang out with the "popular crowd"...Big deal.
If its about skin colour it can imply that she comes from a different part of the community which they don't know much about, might have different religious beliefs or is an immigrant.

Weight in America is a social class issue. I think as a whole, we are less concerned about race these days, but classism is alive and well.
