dating and being friends

When I met my girlfriend Alex, we had an instant connection. I saw myself being great friends with her but I wanted more. I wanted a relationship. We went into telling each other if it's not gonna work out let's end it so we can be great friends. well here we are still together and having a great time.

My question is, is it truly possible to be really great friends with someone but still eb lucky enough to date and possibly marry them? or will it fall apart?
