    Poetry

I have been really hating on American poetry. I was raised on Russian poetry, that unfortunately doesn't sound to pretty once translated into English.

But I really don't feel moved by free verse or blank verse as they call it "poetry".

When I read Russian poetry it reaches deep within my soul and grabs by the most sacred that we have. On the other hand when I read something that doesn't rhyme, no matter how great the vocabulary is, I am left disappointed.

Please share your opinions. I had a huge confrontation at work calling free/blank verses a lazy man's work, something that most anyone can write. It's a collection of random words expressed in a beautiful way, but doesn't require any genius.

Poetry makes my head hurt. Almost without exception I fail to see the beauty in it. I love to read. But not if it's a bunch of foofy shit about walking down a road or gawking at a sunset. Now if it's some epic poetry about a guy plunging a white hot sword into a cyclops' eye or another dude ripping the arm off an evil creature and then jumping into a lake to kill its mommy, that's a different story.

God, so atrocious in the Old Testament, so attractive in the New--the Jekyl and Hyde of sacred romance.

    Muse by Anna Akhamtova

i lost a lot of meaning in translation probably.

When in the night I wait for her impatient
Life seems to me is hanging by a thread
What's liberty and youth and admiration
When it's compared to her gentle step.

And she came in, threw off her veil to edges
Descented down with a sincere heed
I asked her then: Did you dictate the Pages
of Hell to Dante? She answered: Yes, I did.

    Hands by Anna Akhmatova

I squeezed my hands under a veil dim and hazy
"Why are you so pale and upset?"
That is because today i drove him crazy
With sour wine of anger and regret

I won't forget it when he left dumbfound
His mouth was distorted by the pain
Not touching railing I ran down
I followed him until the train

I choked on tears and cried: It was a joke!
That's all it was, and if you leave - I'll die!
He smiled very calmly, when he spoke:
It's windy out here... Pass on by.
