    Starting a Red Cross Club

One of my objectives for the highschool I'm serving this year is to (re)-start a Red Cross club. Which will become one of the 3 branches of an overall Youth Organized for Disaster Action (YODA) club.

I contacted the local Red Cross chapter and they sent me some information.

I must say, I'm excited and intimidated as all hell to be doing this.

I've never been in such a demanding leadership position before.

And considering I'm only 20, I'm only gonna be 2 years older than some of the kids I'm working with.

This year is definitely going to be interesting.

    Hey Fras-

I think that sounds really great. Being two years older gives you a foot in nd a foot out.. Hmm.. I don't exactly know the expression in English, but you'll be this person who is a peer in some ways in that it was not too long ago when you were in high school, and you're not quite an oldie yet. Kids in high school are still full of passion too. Sure sounds exciting. I wish you luck.

    What's a red cross club?
Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?

Word for word and I quote:

American Red Cross school clubs are school-based service groups that help the Red Cross fulfill its humanitarian mission. Working closely with the local Red Cross unit, club members participate in Red Cross service projects that impact their community and world. Student members will discover many new oppurtunities for self-development and be encouraged to choose activities that will most effectively fulfill their community's greatest needs. Red Cross school clubs area team effort, where Red Cross units, schools and students all work together to make their communities and the world a better place, and where young people develop leadership skills.
Currently, one of our goals is to get all those involved in the Red Cross club, and most of those involved with YODA at all CPR, First Aid, and eventually Mass Care certified by the local Red Cross. I also have plans for the students to have awareness sessions at local schools and research what our community's disaster plans are and better educate the school body as well as the locals about it.

That's one of the biggest problems today. Seems like only the "higher ups" know what the plan is. If you ask people on the street if they know about any plan, they'll draw a big question mark.

    Communication people.

    Haven't we learned anything?

Yeah, sounds great! I wish I weren't such a lazy ass...

About the age thing... the thing is, honestly, that these kids will look up and "respect" you (whether they do or not) just becuase you are in a position of authority... I for one was never smart enough to figure out that some of my teaching assistants in hs were only a few years older than I and my classmates and we could totally screw them over; we saw them at a higher position becuase that's how they were presented to us... so I wouldn't be too concerned at all about that

I pass on the razors, but you can start on the foot rub, and be careful not to tickle my feet.

I was reading something that made the distinction between power and authority.

When you have power over somebody, they submit because they are fearful for whatever reason.

While authority is power gained from respect and trust.

I'm really not worried about my ability to gain these kid's respect, it'll just be different. I'd be more comfortable in a leadership position above people older than I, as that's the majority of leadership experience I've had so far. Adults are usually more patient and understanding.

Came across a few belligerent adults in the past, but I put 'em back in their place...it's all about equal respect, extra patience, and a firm hand. Most anybody will hear you out if you can present those things.
