what the **** is a frat?

so i am really not sure what a frat/sorority is.

what are the people generally like? what's the difference? fill me in.

i have heard rumors that they are mostly full of snobby, hardcore party animals.

The people belonging to a specific frat varies quite a bit. For instance, here at Cornell there is one frat I can think of that is basically the school's football team. They are a bunch of assholes.

Some consist of mostly jerks, and others might have a lot of cool people. You just need to check them out yourself because that's the only way to find out, unless you want to take someone elses word for what one frat is like.

Yeah, partying is central to a fraternity. A lot of drinking games, and some frats are well organized and have a separate room for smoking weed at the parties.

Fraternities are for males, sororities are for females.

Check out the dues to join. It is expensive.

I never understood the appeal, really. Usually around 10% of the student body joins one, so certainly you don't NEED to.
Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?

long story short why i am asking,

my girlfriend wants to join but i don't want her to. i am secretly crossing my fingers taht she will not join, or pledge or whatever the stupid vocabulary term is.

the decision is hers, i am just worried about a few things.

    and

i hate their ****in snarky greek attitudes.

If she wants to join, you shouldn't try to stop her. Some people consider it a necessary compnent of college. Besides, she can always drop it next year.

i ddin't say i was trying to stop her, nor am i. my hopes are that she becomes uninterested or she does not make it...

but i did tell her that i am worried about it. i think that it is necessary for her to know that.

Also, people use fraternities/sororities as a tool to fit in with a crowd when they've moved to a new city for schooling.

But, we always looked down on frat guys for having to pay for friends ...

    [edit]

Unless it was a business frat ... then those served more of a purpose than just hazing ...

    +1^

Some are like social clubs, some border on cults, IMO. It is *not* a requirement for attending an Ivy League college & it will be a distraction from the real reason to attend university: to study & learn.

If her reason for considering one is to make friends, I suggest she just live on campus her first year in one of the dorms. She will meet lots of ppl this way w/o the pressures that being in a sorority can bring.

No regular undergrad would require this. Those attending professional school will have their professional association when they graduate (e.g. P-Eng, etc). Anyone else w/a business will opt to join the local Chamber of Commerce or somesuch. Things like that on campus are largely a waste of time at this level.

The real reason to attend college is to own people later on in life. Having knowledge is just a necessity of that

i know i know... but her mind is set on joining a sorority. i don't think she realizes that it will make her look so bad... and she doesn't think she will have to go through any hazing..

i am not quite sure what to tell her... perhaps i will tell her that it would be like *paying* for a group of friends. thanks for that analogy!

she also thinks that it will *help* her get good grades and study... it will probably ruin her dreams to get a premed with psych and spanish to like a major in psych or something. *sigh*

i am introducing her to some of my friends, i think she likes htem...
