When i used to compliment lauryn she did that, she'd argue but not actually much of an argument more like a, i'm not pretty so stop saying it. it was actually quite weird.

I'm so confused. i have to be friendly. i can't be for to long. I have to hint that i like her. I should give her compliments. If i do it wrong i get an awkward silence. I don't know what to do......why can't it just be simple?

Ok..I'm a female (just to avoid misunderstanigs) and I don't like compliments. Pretty eyes, nice smile..blahblah. Every time I've heard this, it sounded awkward, and it's not that I think I don't deserve it. It's just that I always know that they like my smile, my eyes, whatever, long before I hear them actually saying it.
My theory is that guys compliment us not to let us know that they like us, but to see what our response will be..that is, do we like them back.

Since we all know how necessary sometimes is to say that you like someone out loud, I think that the best way to do this is to tell her/him how interesting person you think he/she is, or, at the end of the date, that you had really nice time, and that you could see each other more often.. I know this isn't in-your-face that much, but, for me, it's clear enough.

If she rejects you it just means that she thinks that you are ugly, no biggie...just keep being friends.

Oh God..that was so cruel..but true
Whenever I rejected somebody I couldn't remain friends with him (even though I wanted to), because I knew that I was hurting him with my presence only..reminding him how ugly he is.

Stop it, OV! You're not helping!

Weirdy, I disagree with you. The compliments you're suggesting say "I like you as a friend". Complimenting something physical specifically indicates romantic interest.

Agree, but I just wanted to point out that a girl usually knows if a guy likes her in a non-friendly way, without him saying a thing.
And, if a guy wants to know if she likes him back, he can "ask" more subtly (like I've mentioned above). So, if she doesn't say a thing, everything will be clear- he will realise that he's rejected but not hurted that much, and she would'nt feel THAT bad (or awkward) either.

it really really confuses me when you guys disagree on a help forum and don't reach a conclusion. ok so i compliment her but do i tell her what i like about her, or that shes interesting and what am i looking for in a response, body language was not my major.

Well, you know the old saying, "ask three people, get four opinions". (Well, okay, that saying refers *Jewish* people, but you get my point.)

I'm in the middle on giving compliments. I think girls your age like to hear them, but mainly from the boys they are interested in. A lot of young girls get really sick of hearing the guys throw out meaningless compliments, especially when so many of them are still so insecure about their bodies and looks. It can make her feel awkward unless she very outgoing and confident, and because most boys your age are looking for a way into a girl's pants, many compliments seem like a cheesy line.

However, if a girl rejects you, I disagree with OV that it is because she thinks you are ugly. It just means she doesn't think of you that way.
Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?

    unfortunately for me:
    A. I'm a very logical person and this is all illogical
    B. I'm very insecure out my looks so even if it wasn't knowing me I'd probably take it that way.

But umm i just don't know what to do anymore. girls are harder than anything else in this world.

Don't you have any sisters, enterprise? We really aren't all *that* special (although we *are* pretty cool). Don't go putting us up on a pedastal.

i do, my problem is though that i put her on a pedestal which is definitely a bad thing. i don't put girls on a pedestal but they are hard, none the less.

talking to girls for me is like climbing the tallest mountain. I have to work my way over smaller things first. Unfortunately society kind of pushes you a bit faster then you need to go sometimes.

I am not sure if you have not told her if you like her, but when you do, just be prepared for the whole thing where she is like i just want to be friends and I dont have feelings for you thing. I recently told my friend that I have liked her but I did gave her clues such as buying her flowers on her period. Eventually she will think about it, and ask you if you have feelings for her. It's hard to do something like that especially when you like someone from your heart but you should just man up and do it but take your time but dont be too late. Good luck!!! also to answer your original question, i guess the way i do it is through by just being normal around her, try to have normal conversations but i have been told by my friends that if i still wanted to be with her, just give her, her space, and she will automatically start talking back if she sees something. I know i have had a conversation with her recently about awkwardness and how she talks to my friend about it. the best thing you can do is be nice, and be normal, advice from my friends at college because i am going through the same thing.
