I mentioned earlier that I have a lot of goals for myself and have achieved most of them. Most of my remaining goals actually fit in with the reproduction angle. I want to marry my girlfriend, buy a house, and start a family. I want to raise one or two good kids and leave behind as much as I can for them when I die. Sorry if that sounds boring, but I've already accomplished most of the more unusual goals.

No, that doesn't make any sense.

I would say that the purpose of creating more life serves a greater purpose - creation is also adaptation. Because we observe only a small amount of time, we're incapable of actually seeing changes like evolution without fossil records. The purpose of creating life is not simply to create life. It's an eternal struggle for adaptation - moving towards permanence and immortality. So if we improve ourselves through brute strength and intelligence, our capacity for adaptation increases tenfold. Doesn't that just make you want to get out of bed in the morning and do shit?

The spider has a different adaptation to this world than we do. Are you familiar with the term Relativism? I find it truly amazing that spiders and such arachnids as well as insects can flourish in a world where humans are dominant. Their adaptation for survival did not require the same prerequisites as humans, therefore they have a (what seems to us) much 'simpler' existence or purpose than we apparently do, but truly not. Oh, and I would say that all creatures have dreams and fears. These are responses to stimuli. They may not have artistic aspirations or hopes or sophisticated etiquette or complex verbal language, but they do not need them to survive. It may seem silly or irrelevant to you, but all that is necessary for human development - even the shitty, nonsensical abstract-expressionist school of thought.

If the only purpose to life was ****ing, we wouldn't have such large brains or a use for all the abstract thoughts and everything.

As George Carlin said, when you're born in this world, you're given a ticket to the freak show. When you're an American, you're given a front row seat. The purpose of life is to sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. It's transitory, like traveling - the thrill of the chase.
"Life" is just a four-letter abstract noun for all the stupid shit you do. The people who are remembered most, are those who did the stupidest shit or did a lot of stupid shit.
On the contrary...its the realization that I'm not important and my life is short and relatively meaningless that allows me to let go and not let myself get hung up on the simple worries that plague so many...one that bugs me the most is money...far to many people worry about it....life is there to be lived but it has ho purpose other than to exist....existence is what you make of it.

    Have simply halted
    And now the conversation's done

I agree with dew and Grib. There is virtually no point in wasting too much thought on this or trying to give yourself some higher purpose. When you get down to it, we're all the same, and no one is better than anyone else.

As of right now, I'm taking each day at a time, enjoying what I do have. I enjoy each moment with my boyfriend, whether we're cuddled up at night, watching baseball, or being with friends. I love to eat delicious food and drink. I love to work and become better at my job each day.

I'm finally at the point on my life where I am ready to settle in for a little while and build toward something. Got some good friends by my side that enjoy the same things. I'm good.

I'm just a well oiled cog in a massive machine.

I bitch at it from time to time, but it's not enough to eject myself from it.

The Smashing Pumpkins were my favorite band in high school. I was in love with Billy Corgan and his crazy narcissism.

Purpose implies intent, whereas I believe life to be a consequence, so life itself has no given 'purpose'.

You and you and everyone you know are going to die. So the purpose of life I'd say is to make the best of the precious minutes, hours, days you've got.
    Don't cry, don't regret and don't blame
Weak find the whip, willing find freedom
Towards the sun, carry your name
In warm hands you are given
Ask the wind for the way
Uncertainty's gone, your path will unravel
Accept all as it is and do not blame
    God or the Devil

A blade of grass is alive. Whatever meaning there is to that life, it must be simple.

If you're just talking about the purpose of human lives, you would have a good point. But if you're talking about all life, even fungi or bacteria, then you need a simple mission statement that can cover any level of sentience, including no sentience at all.

I don't know that there is any purpose other than to procreate, but I think finding something meaningful to do with yourself is important. Serving others (or being of use to others) adds meaning.
Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?

The purpose of life, is to reach that moment where you are content. Where you look around and see your friends, the possessions you have, possible wife/husband and/or family, and you are simply content.
