This is practically verbatim what I was going to say. Some of the best gifts are ones that mean something special to the people giving and receiving, but wouldn't be special to anyone else.
If you must do the jewelry thing, you could also consider making it a less stereotypical piece of jewelry. When I was 17 a friend made me a necklace to symbolize our friendship and I still keep it with me to this day.
