What is that type of relationship called when its always on and off with your first love, and even after years of a break up you know in the back of your mind you still love them and would leave anything behind for them?

It isn't called any kind of relationship, because it's not a relationship. You're not in a relationship. That relationship was over years ago. You're broken up now and wasting your time pining over this person.

What do you call it? A waste of time.
It sounds like you've never tried to get over it and have instead made up some fantasy around how great it was.. instead of looking at the reality.
Seriously, if you were off and on and the relationship has been over for years-- it doesnt sound like it was working out, and there's a zero chance of it coming back.
